Birding and Heritage

Thursday, May 18: 5/18/2017 : 6:30 PM - 5/21/2017 : 8:00 PM

May 18-21, the 20th 'Annual Rollin' Along the Santa Fe Trail' Auto Tours and 'Bent on Birding and Heritage' fieldtrips are scheduled in Las Animas in conjunction with Colorado Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month. This provides a popular annual venue for visiting Southeast Colorado in May.

​Over 400 migrating and resident birds and other wildlife have been sighted in the canyons, plains, lakes, rivers and ranches, featuring historic petroglyphs and dinosaur track attractions. Expert guides are available at this annual event seeking the elusive Black Rail, Piping Plover, Least Tern and more. Highlights also include historic homesteads and sites where Kit Carson, Zeb Pike, William Bent, St. Vrain, Prowers, Boggs, Ambassador Thompson, 'Festus' of Gunsmoke and others lived or explored. Have lunch on the trail and dine with guides in the evenings, see movies, go on day trips and night hikes to seek nocturnal birds.

Thursday, May 18​, from 6:30 - ??  pm  a free evening hike is planned at Bent’s Old Fort, (trail behind the Fort),  to seek Black Rail, nightbirds and owls.  (during and following reception for www.socotourismsummit.com

Friday, May 19, gather at John Martin Reservoir Visitor Center​ (open 8am), for 9 am tour with bird expert, Duane Nelson,  to visit areas where the rare piping plover, least terns and black rail have been found.  (BYO lunch).    At 3:30 join other birders (TBA), visit new Boggsville Trail.  Options include 12-4 visit Rawlins Museum; visit Boggsville; 4-5 pm  Historic Courthouse Rooftop tour;  5 pm dining at local restaurant;  6 pm evening birding or movie options – “The Big Year”, or “Hummingbirds”. 

Saturday, May 20, 8 am, meet at Dairy Queen to travel to a private ranch to view ​petroglyphs, dinosaur prints, wildlife and birds (4WD/high clearance required and BYO lunch.).  Options:  Tour a Victorian house under renovatation. Evening   Dining, Silent Auction, Evening Bird Walk or Movie “History on the Rocks”.    

OR 

Saturday visit John Martin Reservoir State Park Visitor Center (8am-4pm), for free special birding and wildlife activities (Bird trails, Bird Bingo, Bird House building – call 829.1801 for times.) 

Sunday, May 21​, from 7-9 am early birding is planned with a private guide.  Other options include 10-4 am guided visits to Ft. Lyon, Bent's New Fort, Amache and/or Sand Creek Massacre site.
