Basis and Purpose
The Northwest corner of the state has received considerable snowfall during the winter months of 2016 and 2017. Accumulations have been above normal on many of the big game winter ranges. Deer, elk and pronghorn are experiencing stress during these winter months and there is the potential to see an increase in winter mortality in all three species. On February 27-29, an additional 12-18” of snow fell in the northwest areas creating even more difficult winter range conditions.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife will be taking emergency measures in many northwest hunting units to keep animals on winter ranges by removing additional stress factors associated with shed and sheath collection and to otherwise protect time sensitive wildlife use of big game winter ranges. Factors include the disturbance by people that would cause animals to consume additional energy needed to survive the winter or move off public winter ranges onto private property and create game damage situations.
Anyone that observes illegal activity is urged to contact their local wildlife office, or to remain anonymous to contact
Operation Game Thief at 877-265-6648. Rewards are available for information that leads to a citation.
