RangerPhyllisandLeggs.jpgThe Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) conducts a wide variety of interpretive and environmental education programs throughout the year. Summer months are busy with Junior Ranger Programs for kids ages 5-11 in Salida and Buena Vista and our new ""Hanging Out - Outdoors" recreation activities for youth ages 12-16. Kids who are dedicated in attending all or most of the programs receive special awards and participate in a rafting trip on the Arkansas River.

AHRA also sponsors or participates in community events such as the annual Arkansas River Clean-up/Green-up in May, which attracts over 350 volunteers to pick up unsightly and unhealthy trash from along the river and surrounding areas. It culminates in a volunteer picnic in Salida, with food, fun and special activities.

AHRA welcomes the opportunity to work with groups, organizations and schools in providing specialized programs to increase awareness and appreciation for the natural resources, history and recreational opportunities of the Upper Arkansas River Valley.

AHRA also schedules a number of interpretive activities, hikes and campfire programs throughout the summer. Visit our calendar to view our program schedule.

If you would like to discuss a program for your group or school, please call AHRA at 719-539-7289 or e-mail us at ahra@state.co.us.
