The reservoir is now ice free and the fishing is heating up with spawning Rainbow Trout being caught in good numbers at the inlet and in all the coves.
Many anglers are having luck (or limiting out on rainbows) at the Inlet/Lot14/Lot16 area, Keystone Cove, and Morrison Cove. Many anglers are having good luck with PowerBait, nightcrawlers, spoons, jigs, and crankbaits.
TAILWATERS FISHING (c/o The Steamboat FlyFisher):
The "tailwater," also known as the upper Yampa, is one of the most productive stretches of river year-round. The dam keeps the flows and water temperature nearly consistent for the entire year. CPW keeps a close eye on the water and river bank health which makes for incredible fishing.
We have seen great nymph fishing with small midges and emergers all day. Make sure you are fishing 6x fluorocarbon tippet, micro split shot and small indicators as this section is low, clear and spooky this time of year.
