To pay tribute to two former community leaders who advocated for land and water conservation in the San Luis Valley, a portion of the Rio Grande SWA was named in their honor. Doug Shriver and Ray Wright were SLV native sons, farmers, conservationists and sportsmen who died together in an unfortunate accident in 2010. The Shriver-Wright SWA is just west of the Rio Grande SWA near Monte Vista.
