The New Year has always been a time of setting goals and tackling new and exciting opportunities. For most of us, improving our physical fitness and living healthier lives is at the top of our New Year’s resolutions.

On January 1, celebrate the arrival of a new year and get a head start on your fitness goals by participating in a First Day Hike at a Colorado State Park.

First Day Hikes are guided expeditions that offer a great way to get exercise, explore nature and welcome in the New Year with friends and family. The hikes, available at 23 state parks across the state, are free but park visitors must possess a valid parks pass to participate.

Giveaways Provided by the Colorado Parks Foundation

Colorado Parks Foundation LogoAfter your hike with us, many parks will offer refreshments and free giveaways that include campfire style mugs, ice scrapers, field notes and pens.

For the second consecutive year, The Colorado Parks Foundation has generously awarded a grant to CPW in support of our First Day Hike events! Thanks to the Foundation, First Day Hike participants can walk away with some fun and useful give-aways.

National Event

The First Day Hikes program is part of a national initiative to promote healthy lifestyles and year-round recreation in the great outdoors. For more information, see the National Association of State Park Directors First Day Hikes page.

Year-round Activity Benefits

Throughout the entire year, why “hike” on a treadmill in a crowded gym when you could hit the trails and enjoy Colorado’s spectacular beauty? And for less than a two-month membership at most gyms, an annual Colorado State Parks Pass ($70) provides hiking, biking and other outdoor recreation opportunities to keep you moving.
