The New Year has always been a time of setting goals and tackling new and exciting opportunities. For most of us, improving our physical fitness and living healthier lives is at the top of our New Year’s resolutions.
On January 1, celebrate the arrival of a new year and get a head start on your fitness goals by participating in a First Day Hike at a Colorado State Park.
First Day Hikes are guided expeditions that offer a great way to get exercise, explore nature and welcome in the New Year with friends and family. The hikes, available at state parks across the state, are free but park visitors must possess a valid parks pass to participate.
The First Day Hikes program is part of a national initiative to promote healthy lifestyles and year-round recreation in the great outdoors. For more information, see the National Association of State Park Directors First Day Hikes page.
Throughout the entire year, why “hike” on a treadmill in a crowded gym when you could hit the trails and enjoy Colorado’s spectacular beauty? And for less than a two-month membership at most gyms, an
annual Colorado State Parks Pass ($70) provides hiking, biking and other outdoor recreation opportunities to keep you moving.

AHRA - First Day HikeSunday, January 1
AHRA volunteer naturalist Bob Hickey will lead the public on an invigorating “First Day” hike Friday, January 1, 2017 to usher in the New Year in perfect Colorado outdoor style!
Tentatively, the mid-morning hike will be conducted in the scenic northern Fourmile Area and the old Midland Railroad Grade. The loop will be designed so that hiking will be done on the existing roads, trails, and a major wash in the area – there will be no cross-country foot travel in the snow. The route will be adjusted to the snow conditions on the day of the event. Hikers will have fantastic views of the snowy upper Arkansas River valley and the Sawatch Mountain Range, as well as enjoy the rugged shallow canyon scenery and unique granitic boulder formations of the Arkansas Hills.
Barr Lake State Park - First Day HikesSunday, January 1
