Chancellor Ranch is a State Land Board Commissioners property. Only Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep licenses are valid at Chancellor Ranch. The ranch is located east of Trinidad with access from Highway 160, then north via County Road 147.

Season Dates

Chancellor Ranch sheep licenses are only available to Colorado residents. Chancellor Ranch sheep licenses are only valid on the Chancellor Ranch. Apply for a Chancellor Ranch license through the Primary Draw. These licenses may not be used to hunt bighorn sheep on other public or private lands.

  • Ewe season: January 1-10
  • Ram seasons: September 1-20; December 1-31.

No other hunting allowed for bighorn sheep license holder or license holder’s guests.

Location

Located east of Trinidad with access from Highway 160, then north via County Road 147.

Terrain

Ranch terrain consists of steep, rocky canyons, rolling grasslands, plateaus, cliffs and mesa tops. Vegetation varies depending on site type of riparian area, canyon or mesa top.

Access

Bighorn sheep license holder will have access to entire ranch. Vehicle access only on established roads and no vehicle access off county roads if wet, muddy conditions exist. Horses allowed.

Camping

Primitive camping area (no water/electricity) will be designated for license holder and their guests/guides. No more than two non-hunting guests/guides may accompany license holder unless approved by State Land Board in advance by written permission.

Game Retrieval Services

No vehicles off established roads.

Guiding Services

The bighorn sheep license holder may hunt the ranch without a guide, or with the help of licensed guide of their choice. Outfitting and guiding services are available, for a fee, through the big game hunting lessee on the Chancellor Ranch: KB Outdoors (Kyle Lopez: 719-640-3888, [email protected], www.kbhunting.com).

Bighorn Sheep Access Program

This property is part of the Bighorn Sheep Access program. The Bighorn Sheep Access program provides Colorado residents a unique opportunity to hunt on private ranch land normally closed to the public.

Through this program, hunters can play an important role in assisting CPW and landowners in managing bighorn sheep populations on private lands.
