Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission approves initiating rulemaking related to citizen petition to prohibit fur sales

3/5/26DENVER – DENVER – At its March meeting in Westminster, the Parks and Wildlife Commission voted 6-4 to initiate rulemaking related to a citizen petition to amend the regulations to “prohibit the commercial sale of wildlife fur in Colorado.” The proposed prohibition could apply to Colorado’s 17 hunted and trapped furbearer species: coyote, beaver, bobcat, mink, pine marten, badger, red fox, gray fox, swift fox, raccoon, ring-tailed cat, striped skunk, western spotted skunk, long-tailed weasel, short-tailed weasel, opossum and muskrat.
“The vote does not mean the entirety of the citizen petition has been approved,” said CPW Director Laura Clellan. “In the coming months, CPW staff will draft a proposed rule to initiate our rulemaking process, along with an issue paper or draft regulations outlining any proposed exceptions that may be necessary or appropriate.”
Once CPW staff have developed a proposed rule, the issue will come back to the Commission for consideration and potential further modification in subsequent regulatory steps. A date has not yet been set for this discussion.
