UPDATED: CPW seeks applicants for Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area Walk-and-Wade permit

SALIDA, Colo. – Colorado Parks and Wildlife invites anglers and entrepreneurs to apply for one available Walk-and-Wade permit on the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area. The permit, one of 15 total authorizations on the AHRA, allows the recipient to conduct walk-and-wade outfitter business activities as a fishing instructor and guide throughout the AHRA. The permit is for one year beginning spring 2026 with the option to renew.
The AHRA stretches over 152 miles along the Arkansas River from the confluence of the East and Lake Forks to Lake Pueblo Reservoir. Of those 152 miles, 102 miles of river are designated as Gold Medal Waters and showcase a world-class fishery. Gold Medal Waters are the highest quality cold-water habitats and have the capability to produce many quality-sized (14-inches or longer) trout.
“The AHRA will award this Walk-and-Wade permit to an individual or entity committed to providing high-quality guided walk-and-wade fishing services,” said Corrine Servis, AHRA Operations Manager. “The ideal candidate will offer enjoyable and educational outdoor experiences while actively promoting stewardship of Colorado's natural resources within the local community.”
Applicants seeking consideration should send an email to [email protected] to request an "Invitation to Apply" DocuSign application. The reply email will include a personal DocuSign application. Applications must be completed and submitted no later than 5 p.m. on Dec. 5.
Completed applications will be reviewed and evaluated by CPW. Applicants will be notified of their status in the selection process. For the awarded recipient, a non-refundable application fee applies and annual fees are based on the fee structure detailed here.
Angling is a multi-million dollar industry in Colorado. Outfitters in the state report part-time seasonal earnings between $185 to $400 per day, plus tips, based on individual experience, trip length and group size.
