Dog Off Leash Area Improvement Plan - Fall 2019

Monday, October 14: 10/14/2019 : 12:00 AM - 10/17/2019 : 12:00 PM

The Dog Off Leash Area(DOLA) at Cherry Creek State Park will be temporarily closed October 14th through October 17th.

  • Installing 2 new bull-pens (dog entrances):
    •   The Park will be able to introduce "entrance" and "exit" only bull-pens to lessen dog traffic and confrontations between tired dogs leaving the Park and energetic dogs entering the Park.
    • This will help disperse the amount of dog urine excreted upon entry in a concentrated area, thus lessening the dog urine aroma.  Pea gravel is pervious and will allow urine to be soaked into the ground vs. the cement
  • Relocating access gates:
    • The Park will be relocating the entrance gates off of Orchard Road closer to the main DOLA parking lot, allowing Park staff to be able to control access to the DOLA parking lot while still being able to allow access to the stables.
  • Road Striping the main DOLA parking lot and creating a "one-way" traffic flow pattern:
    • Striping the DOLA parking lot will assist with locating designated parking spaces.
    • By creating a "one-way" traffic pattern there will be less traffic safety issues and allow for an easy and better traffic flow.
  • Erosion control improvements in the Northwest Corner of the DOLA
    • The Park will be completing a multi phase project to improve erosion control in the Northern half of the DOLA.  This will assist trails over drainages not be "washed" out during significant rain events and allow vegetation to improve.
  • Vegetation Sustainability management:
    • Park staff will be spraying noxious weeds so that DOLA visitors will continue to have access to all areas of the DOLA and Cherry Creek while protecting native grasses and vegetation.
    • Park staff will be mowing noxious weeds so that DOLA visitors will continue to have access to all land areas of the DOLA.
    • Park staff will be seeding with native grasses in areas of the DOLA to re-establish native vegetative areas within the DOLA.
  • Trail work/improvements:
    • In certain areas along the trail, Park staff will be adding road base and then a layer of crusher fine to elevate the trail to assist with erosion control concerns in the DOLA.

The temporary closure is necessary as there is no period of time to safely conduct needed maintenance in the area while the DOLA is open.
