General Camping Information

• ​A parks pass is required on all vehicles.
  
• Campground users must have both a camping reservation and a daily parks pass.
• Camping is only permitted in designated campsites or specific backcountry areas.
  
• Minimum impact camping techniques are recommended in alpine lake areas.
• Camping isn’t allowed in the Lake Agnes Basin. 
• Horses are not permitted within campgrounds.
• Dump station is located off County Road 41 on the road to the shop just past the entrance station.
• No showers available.
• No improvised backcountry fires allowed, grills only as allowed by fire bans.​

Campgrounds

The Crags 

Capacity: 25 sites

The Crags Campground offers visitors 25 developed sites that are on the reservation system. 

Access to this area is steep, narrow, winding and rough. Trailers and motor homes are not allowed. 

Features: Campground accommodations include vault toilet facilities and hand-pumped water.

Ranger Lakes

Capacity: 31 sites

This campground offers 31 electric sites and is directly accessible from Highway 14 and within a short walk of Ranger Lakes fishing areas. 

Features: ​

• The fishing area includes a fishing pier for people with disabilities. 
• Water and vault toilet facilities are available nearby, but please fill large tanks at the new dump station near the N.M. entrance gate. 
• A nature trail and the Gould Loop Trail are accessible from the campground. 
• Interpretive programs are offered on some weekend nights in the campground amphitheater.

Restrictions: Boating and swimming are not permitted in the Ranger Lakes.

North Michigan

Capacity: 13 sites, 6 cabins

This campground borders the North Michigan reservoir and provides easy access to fishing and hiking. The campground is divided into the North Side and the South Side. The North Side has 13 campsites and six cabins. Site 207 is universally accessible. The South Side offers 35 campsites, with 5 pull-through sites.

Features: Campground accommodations include water spigots, vault toilet facilities and two boat ramps with boat docks.

Restrictions: Boating on the reservoir is restricted to wakeless speeds only. No swimming is permitted.

Bockman

​Capacity: 52 sites

This campground is located one mile north of the North Michigan Reservoir within view of the Medicine Bow mountain range. It hosts 52 sites. There are 13 pull-through sites and one group area with six sites. 

Features: The Bockman horse corral is located near the pull-through sites. Campground accommodations include vault toilet facilities and water spigots.

North Park (Closed)

Important: The North Park Campground, cabins and facilities are closed until further notice for renovations.

Capacity: 29 sites

This campground is CLOSED for renovations. Located right off of County Road 41 and State Highway 14 it includes 14 campsites sites. There are 6 pull-through sites, 8 back-in sites, 7 rustic cabins with heat, but no other amenities and two deluxe cabins with electric heat 3/4 bathroom. 

Features (CLOSED): Campground facilities closed until further notice.

Primitive Campsites

State Forest State Park offers over 40 primitive sites on our reservation system. The sites are divided into two groups, those accessible from State Highway 14 and several remote sites in the Northern section of the park along Mendenhall Road (4WD). The sites accessible from State Highway 14 are located along County Road 41 and the Bockman, Montgomery Pass, Francisco Loop and Ruby Jewel roads. 

Important: Some sites, especially 415, 416, 440, 441 and 465 are hard to reach, and will require high-clearance 4 wheel drive vehicles. 402 and 403 might require an OHV to reach. Note that 406 - 408, 410 - 414 and 421 can be reached with a 2 wheel drive vehicle but are on a rough road, so thick tires and 4 wheel drive are recommended.

Sites 701, 702, 703, 704, 705, and 706 are in the Northern section of the park, and not near North Michigan Reservoir, Moose Visitor Center, trash dumpsters or any bathroom facility. These sites are accessed via Mendenhall Road which requires 4 wheel drive. As with all of our camp sites, please use Leave No Trace Principles.

Features: Many of these sites offer seclusion and great views. Each site has a fire ring but no picnic table. Some offer vault toilet facilities (469-485).

Backcountry Camping

Before camping in the backcountry, campers should check with a ranger or at the park office for information. 

Backcountry camping is allowed at various locations throughout the park including Ruby Jewel, Kelly, Clear and American Lakes. Minimum impact camping techniques are recommended at these alpine lake areas. 

Restrictions: 

• No camping is allowed in the Lake Agnes area.
• Fires are only allowed in designated fire rings, therefore no backcountry fires are allowed in improvised (rock ring) fire rings!​ You can have a fire in a gas grill, as long as it is not restricted by a fire ban.
• Must camp 1/4 of a mile from any trailhead, campground or established structure and 100 feet from any trail or source of water
