Wray Fish Hatchery
Wray State Fish Hatchery lies in Yuma County, just three miles northwest of Wray. Wray Hatchery was originally constructed in 1937 by a private fish grower, but was purchased by Colorado Game and Fish in 1939. From 1939 to the mid 1970s, rainbow trout were the primary species produced. Now, over 10 species of warmwater and coolwater species are propagated, reared and stocked around the state.
Wray Hatchery currently stocks walleye, saugeye, striped bass, wiper, tiger muskie, bluegill, redear sunfish, channel catfish, black crappie and hybrid grass carp in all areas of our beautiful state. Every year, over 80 million eggs and fish, of all sizes and species, go through the hatchery. There are fish on the unit all months of the year, and any time is a great time to stop by and see how beautiful this hatchery and the surrounding area are!

Walley
Every year, Wray Hatchery receives between 70−100 million walleye and walleye hybrid (saugeye) eggs. These eggs originate from two broodstock spawning operations located in the Denver metro area. Eggs are sorted, sized and transferred into spawning jars, where they are kept for nine days before hatching. After hatching, they are transported all across the state to restore fish populations in lakes and reservoirs. Eggs are also traded with other states in exchange for other species.

Striped Bass
Striped bass and striped bass hybrids (wipers) are released every year in lakes and reservoirs in the eastern half of the state. These fish come from eggs that are taken by staff at wild spawns and from other states.
Your Fishin’ Is Our Mission!
Colorado’s Fish Stocking Program
Since 1881, Colorado Parks & Wildlife fish hatcheries have been dedicated to improving the fish populations of our beautiful state. Today, CPW operates 19 hatcheries that breed, hatch, rear and stock over 90 million fish per year. Many of the fish produced are to enhance angling opportunities, while others serve a critical role in native species recovery efforts. Colorado fish hatcheries support our angling pastime, which contributes 2.4 billion dollars annually to our state's economy!
