Celebrate the end of summer with a 'Star Party' and more at Mueller State Park

By Linda Groat
Colorado Parks and Wildlife Program Coordinator

DIVIDE, Colo. – There will be a “Star Party,” a salamander search, a hike to hunt for early fall colors and even a fly fishing clinic this weekend as Mueller State Park celebrates the end of the summer season over the long Labor Day Weekend with its guests.

After the moon sets on Saturday, around 8 p.m. when the skies get dark, members of the Colorado Springs Astronomical Society will take guests on a tour of the heavens through their telescopes. Prepare for a fabulous viewing of the night sky. Bring a chair and blanket.

On Friday evening, at 7:30 p.m., park guests will learn about the big cats in the area and what to do if you see one. All ages are welcome and encouraged to bring a jacket for the cool evening air.

The hunt for turning aspen leaves will occur Saturday morning at 9 a.m. as Naturalist Abby leads guests on a one-mile walk to the highest point in the park. If any aspen have begun to turn gold, Abby will find them.

The Peak View Salamander Search Hike begins at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, starting at the Elk Meadow Trailhead. Naturalist Jack will lead an easy 1.25-mile hike down to Peak View Pond to look for salamanders.

Finally, on Labor Day, guests will gather for a fly fishing clinic at 10 a.m. at Dragonfly Pond where Mueller volunteer Craig will teach the basics of the angling art of fly fishing. Guests 8 years and up are invited and they only need to bring their enthusiasm as all equipment is provided.

But the fun doesn’t end on Labor Day weekend. Mueller hosts naturalist programs all of September to help guests learn about the area. Evening amphitheater programs will continue on weekends and guided hikes are available.

Special programs in September include Native Bees of Colorado program, a glimpse at some of the 950 species of bees in Colorado.  Also on the schedule are a dark sky hike, a moon hike, and programs on elk, bats and cats.  Perhaps the last outdoor fly fishing and archery classes are planned for the season.

Mueller is open to guided school field trips.  Bring your students to the park for an educational experience they will not forget.

And then there is the attraction of the fall colors, which typically peak towards the end of September and early October, depending on temperature and moisture.

Best of all, these park activities are free to guests with a vehicle park pass.
