Part of this 2 mile loop was upgraded over the summer. Check out the new reroute and enjoy this beautiful area of the park on this great morning hike. Depending on snow conditions spikes or snowshoes may be helpful. Meet at Preacher’s Hollow Trailhead.

What  do  wild animals  do in the winter?  Learn  how wildlife survives in the cold, snowy season and try your own animal survival experiment. Prepare for part of the program to be outside. Best for ages 5+. Meet at the Visitor Center.

If skies are clear Mars will be at its closest point in two years. The Colorado Springs Astronomical Society will have several telescopes set up outside of the Visitor Center for everyone to view the stars and planets of the night sky. Visitor Center parking lot.

Mars is closest to Earth, Venus is furthest angle away from the Sun at Sunset and we have Saturn and Jupiter to view on a Moonless night. Let’s have a planet party!

Join the Friends of Highline Lake for their monthly meeting. Friends meetings are open to the public and are a great way to support your local state park. The meeting will take place at the Visitor Center.

Hike to remnants of a cabin built in the early 1900s by the Osborn family. Learn about homesteaders who called the land home on this 3.5 mile hike. Meet at Black Bear Trailhead.

This is the second of a three part winter series that will continue in February. What is hiding in the dead of winter? What do you enjoy about nature this time of year? Attend all three programs and receive a Junior Naturalist Certificate. All are welcome even if you can’t make it to the other programs in the series. Come prepared to be outside! This is a guided adventure led by Debbie, Certified Interpretive Guide and Naturalist Instructor at Pikes Peak State College. In this workshop you will discover the history, science and art of observing nature and recording observations. Nature journaling helps us reflect and expand our perspectives of the natural world around us and our place within it. All materials will be provided for you; you are welcome to bring your own journal if you’d prefer. Come prepared for a short hike, sitting outdoors for a short period of time (some chairs will be available), and changing weather. Ages 16+.
