Water Safety

Boating and other water activities are popular for both Colorado residents and park visitors, but safety should always come first. Weather conditions can change rapidly, creating unexpected hazards on the water. While air temperatures may feel warm, water temperatures often remain dangerously cold. Water below 68°F can quickly lead to cold shock, causing involuntary gasping, water inhalation, and rapid loss of muscle function. These effects can result in hypothermia, unconsciousness, or an inability to swim. Wearing a life jacket is one of the most effective ways to stay safe. Most water-related fatalities occur when life jackets are not used. Always wear one and be prepared so you can enjoy your time on the water and return home safely.
