CPW to host North Park Snow Dog Race at State Forest State Park March 15 and 16

WALDEN, Colo. — Colorado Parks and Wildlife is excited to partner with the Rocky Mountain Dog Sled Club (RMDSC) to host the Second Annual North Park Snow Dog Race at State Forest State Park on Sat., March 15, and Sun., March 16 at State Foreset State Park, in Walden, Colo.
“We are so excited to partner with Rocky Mountain Sled Dog Club and host this event again this year,” said Tony Johnson, State Forest State Park Senior Ranger. “Last year’s event was a huge success, and it showcases that regardless of the season, there is always an opportunity to enjoy the Colorado outdoors at State Forest State Park.”
“The goal of RMDSC is to share their knowledge and love for the sport of dog sledding,” said Katie Day with Rocky Mountain Dog Sled Club. “Dogs and mushers are training up for this race with anticipation, enthusiasm, and excitement of showing off a season’s worth of accomplishments.”
This two-day event will take place on the Gould Loop Trail and sections of the Ranger Lakes Nature Trail, featuring distances between two and twelve miles. Races will begin at 9 a.m. from the Gould Community on both days. Most events will involve dog sleds, while one will be dedicated to skijoring.
The Gould Loop and Ranger Lakes trails will remain open to the public during the two-day event. However, those planning to attend the event or hike, snowshoe, or ski the trails are encouraged to leave their dogs at home.
State Forest State Park staff reminds visitors looking for an outdoor adventure with their pet that there are plenty of other trail options available throughout the park. For a complete list of trails at State Forest State Park, visitors are encouraged to check out the State Forest State Park trail list on our website or download the COTREX app for detailed information on each route to find the right trail for you.
Attendance at the event is free, but you must have a valid $12 daily park pass or an annual Keep Colorado Wild pass to enter the park. Participants are encouraged to arrive early, as parking is limited at the Gould Community Center. Additional parking is available at the Moose Visitor Center, which requires a half-mile hike to reach the Community Center.
