AHRA’s Salida East Recreation Site to close temporarily in April

SALIDA, Colo. – The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) will temporarily close its Salida East Recreation Site for nine days in April for construction work.

The 19-acre Salida East site features a boat ramp, vault toilets and change facility as well as 29 basic campsites, 4 walk-in sites and 1 yurt located on the south banks of the Arkansas River about three miles east of Salida along U.S. Highway 50.

The AHRA will close Salida East to all access April 15-24 to allow crews to install a cement apron at the entrance/exit of the recreation site to improve traffic safety for guests.

Salida East is one of 17 recreation sites Colorado Parks and Wildlife manages under a lease with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management’s Royal Gorge Field Office in Cañon City.

The AHRA stretches 152 miles along the Arkansas River from Leadville to Pueblo. It is managed through a cooperative effort between the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service and Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Formed in 1989, this partnership allows agencies to provide visitors with recreation opportunities and care for significant natural resources of the upper Arkansas River valley.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is an enterprise agency, relying primarily on license sales, state parks fees and registration fees to support its operations, including: 43 state parks and more than 350 wildlife areas covering approximately 900,000 acres, management of fishing and hunting, wildlife watching, camping, motorized and non-motorized trails, boating and outdoor education. CPW's work contributes approximately $6 billion in total economic impact annually throughout Colorado.
