Introducing “Adventures of a Rookie Sportsperson”

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Today, Colorado Parks and Wildlife launches a new monthly feature: Adventures of a Rookie Sportsperson written by Joey Livingston, a CPW statewide public information officer based in Denver.

In words, photos and video, Livingston will show your audiences how to become hunters, anglers and all other manner of outdoors enthusiasts.

Last month, Livingston began attending CPW’s year-long Rookie Sportsperson Program (RSP) offered by our Southeast Region in Colorado Springs. The RSP is one of many hunter outreach programs offered by CPW statewide.

The RSP was started in 2015 as a year-long mentorship program designed for people with little or no outdoor experience. It teaches them outdoor skills and, hopefully, inspires them to get outside and sample all the adventures available in Colorado’s great outdoors.

RSP participants are paired with CPW wildlife officers who guide them through a wide range of outdoor activities, starting with hunter-education training, firearms handling, small and big game hunting, fly fishing, camping, backpacking, field dressing, meat processing and other outdoor adventures.

A novice to hunting and other outdoor recreation opportunities, Livingston will be attending RSP events throughout the year, highlighting the program and its participants.

Livingston will write about his experiences each month during the year, taking readers along on his adventures and those of other members of the class. He’ll describe his experiences and the skills the program imparts and he’ll profile other families in the program.

In addition to inspiring your readers and viewers to get outdoors, each column will include calendar listings of upcoming CPW family-friendly outdoor programs and events around Colorado for readers to enjoy. Photos and brief videos will accompany each column.

If you are interested in covering any of these programs, please reach out ahead of time as some events take place a month or two before the column is published.

Here is a general list of the topics Livingston will be covering:

May: Hunter Education

June: Turkey 101/Spring turkey hunt

July: Fishing and camping north of Woodland Park

August: Learning to shoot .22-caliber and large bore firearms on CPW shooting ranges

September: Deer and Pronghorn Hunting 101

October: Elk and Waterfowl Hunting 101

November: Dove hunt/Small Game 101/rifle qualifications

February, 2025: Ice fishing 101

March, 2025: Cooking 101/RSP banquet

We hope you and your readers will join Livingston on this adventure. We’ll provide photos and videos to accompany the columns and we’d welcome media participation in any of our RSP program events.
