Know Before You Go

Courses are available on a first-come-first-served basis. All shooters must check-in at the office before going to any shotgun course and check-out when finished.

    • Eye and Ear protection required for shooters and spectators at all times. (spares are available in the Range Office)
    • Pistols and rifles are not allowed to be used on the clay ranges.
    • After shooting each station, you are required to pick up your shotshell hulls and trash and place them into the correct marked containers.
    • Side-by-side Shooters will need to bring their own shotguns and ammunition (7 1/2 or smaller shot, 2 3/4 inch shells – no magnums).

Our clays are part of a statewide retail system and we are not at able to provide free “show me” clays or breakage reimbursement. Based on the quality of our courses and a pricing comparison with other top quality ranges, we have included these costs in the per/bird pricing and feel that it is comparable or less than others. If you experience excessive breakage with a particular thrower, please contact the office at (970) 464-1339 or let our on site range staff know.

    • Pointing or allowing a firearm to be pointed (whether loaded or not) at or near another person will result in immediate termination of shooting privileges for the day. Repeat offenders may be banned permanently from CSEC activities.
    • No going forward of the shooting stands at any time for any reason (call staff).
    • Load and unload firearms inside of shooting stands only. Firearms must be completely unloaded between shooting positions.
    • No more than two shells loaded per shotgun at any time.
    • No shot sizes larger than 7 ½, shells larger than 2 ¾” or loads exceeding 1 ⅛ oz.
    • Firearm barrel length must be a minimum of 18” and have a buttstock.
    • Any firearm carried on a UTV/ATV, firearm must be secured to the vehicle or in case.

At all times when not in the stand and actively engaging targets:

    • All Semi-Auto and Pump Action Shotguns must have actions open with the barrel pointed straight up.
    • Break Actions may be carried over the shoulder or forearm with the barrel pointed forward and the action open.

    Long Range Precision Range

The terrain is complex, encompassing canyons and rolling hills, giving rise to sometimes challenging wind conditions. The Long Range Precision Range shooting shelter is 3200 sq. ft., enclosed on three sides and also has a fully enclosed office.  Targets at distances over 400 yards have electronic sensors that flash brightly for several seconds when the target is hit, and are easily visible over the entire length of the range, even in bright daylight.

    Know Before You Go

The range is available on public days or by special reservation. Reservations at least 24 hours in advance are required to use the Long Range Precision Range.  Call the range office at 970-464-1339 to make a reservation. Periodically the range may be closed for special events.

      • All participants must sign in at the range office before going to the range.
      • To minimize road damage, 4-wheel drive should be used (if equipped) on the access road to the range. A UTV is available for rent.
      • Eye and Ear protection required for all shooters and spectators.
      • Shooters must police their brass and clean up following range use (mark your brass if you want to keep it).
      • No 50 BMG allowed on the range due to extreme ricochet hazard.

      Ammunition Limitations

Due to the presence of our electronic flashers, there is a limit on the muzzle energy permitted on the LRP. Ammunition exceeding a muzzle energy of 5,000 ft-lbs  are not permitted to engage any target at a distance of less than 1,000 yards. Use of the .50 BMG cartridge or its derivatives (such as .416 Barrett) is not permitted on the LRP at any time.

You can calculate your ammunition’s muzzle energy as follows:

Velocity X Velocity X Bullet Weight  =  Muzzle Energy in ft. lbs.
      450,240

Where the Velocity is given in feet per second and the Bullet Weight is in grains. This information is typically provided on the box. Cartridges of .338 Lapua or less are usually OK.

The table below shows the velocity limits for a variety of bullet weights:

      Armor-Piercing, Tracer and Penetrator Ammunition

Conditions on the LRP tend to be very dry, and while fire mitigation has been performed, it is essential that the types of ammunition allowed do not pose a threat of fire.  It is especially important to remember that no tracer, incendiary, armor-piercing (black tip) or penetrator (green tip) ammunition is permitted on the ranges at CSEC as they constitute a fire hazard. This includes M855 surplus ammunition.

Armor-piercing and penetrator rounds have steel cores which cause sparks when they impact steel targets. Additionally, these rounds damage our steel targets, requiring their replacement.

Generally, if the projectile in the round attracts a magnet, it is not permitted. If you have any questions regarding the suitability of your ammunition, please ask the Range Safety Officer or inquire at the range office.

Please take note: Not all steel-cored penetrator ammunition is marked. Recent 5.56mm Australian imports look just like conventional rounds. Know your ammo!

      • Pointing or allowing a firearm (whether loaded or not) to be pointed at or near another person will result in immediate termination of shooting privileges for the day. This includes owners of unattended firearms placed horizontally anywhere other than on the firing line which someone walks in front of. This is a Zero Tolerance policy and will be strictly enforced.
      • No going forward of muzzles at any time while the range is hot for any reason. This includes to retrieve gear or pick up brass. Anyone going down-range of muzzles on the firing line while the line is hot will be required to put away their gear and stop shooting for the day and either leave or remain behind the firing line.
      • Any accidental or negligent discharge will disqualify the shooter for the remainder of the day.
      • If an unsafe condition is observed, everyone is responsible to take action and loudly declare a cease fire. The Range Safety Officer will take charge and evaluate the safety issue until it is adequately resolved.
      • All firearms shall be uncased only at the bench, muzzle pointing down range
      • All firearms will arrive at the firing line empty with the bolt/action open.
      • Auto loaders must have chamber flags in any time that they are not on the bench.
      • All uncased firearms will be carried with muzzles straight up and actions open.
      • Uncased firearms are allowed to be horizontal on the firing line only (otherwise, muzzle up!)
      • No loaded firearms anywhere other than on the firing line and only when the line is hot.
      • No uncased guns are allowed to be placed on or leaned against the picnic tables.
      • No assembling, preparing, working on or repairing of guns or ammunition on the picnic tables.
      • No tracer/incendiary or AP/ penetrator (green tip) rounds allowed. Full auto allowed only during specially permitted events.
      • For target engagement beyond 1,000 yards, you and your equipment must be reasonably capable of reliably impacting the steel targets at the distances that you intend to engage them.
      • No random or unreasonable “hail Mary” elevation adjustments “in hopes of hitting a target.”
      • All shooting must be done from the marked firing line (except as authorized during permitted events).

To shoot at or beyond 1,000 yards on the LRP range you must be able to:

      • Show elevation drop chart “dope card”, ballistics program, or be able to verbally articulate the known ballistics of your cartridge to the Range Safety Officer.
      • Alternately, be able to demonstrate consistent proficiency at 1000 yards before moving on.

      LabRadar Chronographs

LabRadar Chronographs are available, including the services of a trained Range Safety Officer, to the public for use in measuring the velocities of rifle and pistol loads. The unit is set up on the bench next to the firearm, and is not ahead of the muzzle or the firing line. This means that it is not necessary to clear the line to set it up, and there is no danger of putting a round through it, like a conventional optical chronograph. On Bays 2 through 7, the chronograph service costs $20 per hour, and includes an operator. At the Long Range Precision range the cost is $20 per hour or $10 for up to 5 shots. Contact the range office at (970)464-1339 for more information, or to make a reservation for a chronograph session.
