What to Do at Rifle Gap

Rifle Gap State Park offers excellent boating, fishing, swimming and water skiing on its clear, 350-acre reservoir. The surrounding mountains and narrow "gap" provide good wind conditions for sailing and windsurfing. With 89 camping sites, picnicking and a 6,000-foot elevation surrounded by pinyon- and cedar-covered mountains, it's a fantastic outdoor destination.

The reservoir

The park's main attraction is a 350-acre reservoir where visitors can boat, fish, jet ski and water ski.

Jet Skiing

Jet skiing is becoming an increasingly popular sport at the reservoir. Be familiar with no-wake zones and no-boat areas. Please check at the aquatic nuisance species station for life jackets if you do not have them for each person riding the jet skies. Jet skis will need to be inspected for aquatic nuisance species before launch.

At 6,000 feet and surrounded by pinyon- and cedar-covered mountains, visitors enjoy a scenic setting for their outdoor meals. Rifle Gap offers multiple sites and beautiful views. Sites are available on first-come, first-served basis.

Nestled behind the Grand Hogback and below the White River National Forest, Rifle Gap State Park is a perfect place to experience clear mountain skies. With 89 campsites, Rifle Gap is a great spot to plan an overnight stargazing trip. Enjoy breathtaking views of the night sky from one of the many wide-open campsites.

Hiking

Trails

The nearly five miles of designated hiking trails​ located within the park can be accessed from any of the camping loops, the Visitor Center parking lot and the swim beach. It is possible to walk the perimeter of the lake as well. Adjacent to the park is Bureau of Land Management land, which offers a multitude of dirt roads that you can hike.

Rifle Gap State Park Hunting

Hunting

Excellent deer hunting and fair elk hunting areas are located adjacent to the park. Several hunting groups set up base camps in the campgrounds at Rifle Gap.
