Yampa State Park

About Duffy Mountain, Juniper Canyon, and Maybell Bridge

Along the Yampa River, Duffy Mountain, Juniper Canyon, and Maybell Bridge are the closest sites to the towns of Maybell and Craig. All three sites have between class I and V rapids, depending on the time of year. All 3 sites offer camping.

    Yampa State Park

    Site 7 - Duffy Mountain

    Located 32 miles downstream from South Beach and about 30 miles southwest of Craig. Take U.S. Highway 40 west of Craig for 19 miles to Moffat County Road 17. County Road 17 is located near the town of Lay. Drive approximately 10.2 miles to Bureau of Land Management Road 1593 and turn left. Travel one mile and the Duffy Mountain site is on the right.

    • River Flow Class: between Class I and Class V rapids, depending on the time of year.
    • Float Skill Level: Beginner, Novice, or Advanced.

      • Parking at Government bridge is not permitted.
      • Downstream there is lots of private land. Take maps,  and do not trespass.

      Camping at Duffy Mountain

      Camping permits can be purchased on-site from the kiosk. Duffy Mountain has 5 primitive campsites.

      Yampa State Park

      Site 8 - Juniper Canyon

      Take U.S. Highway 40 west out of Craig for about 20 miles to Moffat County Road 53. Drive south about 3.6 miles to Moffat County Road 74 and turn right (west). Travel for 0.8 of a mile to the site.

      • Distance from Previous Site: 12 miles
      • Boat Ramp: Developed Boat Ramp
      • River Flow Class: between Class III Class IV rapids, depending on the time of year.
      • Float Skill Level: Novice, or Advanced.
      • Nearest Take Out: 

      CAUTION: Due to Class III rapids, open canoeists should not travel over the diversion dam located in Juniper Canyon. Canoeists and inexperienced boaters should portage on the right or left side of the river.

        Visitor Center

        The Visitor Center is located at the Headquarters campground near Hayden, Colorado. The Visitor Center provides visitor and traveler information as well as maps and other printed resources. The display area emphasizing Native American history, agricultural heritage, and river ecology will captivate visitors young and old alike. A small store with books, clothing, and miscellaneous supplies will help outfit visitors for their stay.

        Camping permits can be purchased on-site from the kiosk. Juniper Canyon has 12 primitive campsites.

        Yampa State Park

        Site 9 - Maybell Bridge

        Located 28 miles west of Craig on U.S. Highway 40, or 3 miles east of Maybell U.S. Highway 40. The site is located south of the highway. 

        • Distance from Previous Site: 13 miles
        • Boat Ramp: Limited foot access to the river.
        • River Flow Class: between Class I-II and Class V rapids, depending on the time of year.
        • Float Skill Level: Beginner, Novice, or Advanced are welcome.
        • Nearest Take Out: Moffat County Road 19 CPW property, or river access off Hwy 318 at Sunbeam.
