What is Clay Shooting?

What is Clay Shooting?

Clay pigeon shooting is the art of shooting at special flying targets, known as clay pigeons or clay targets, with a shotgun. Clay shooting can be roughly divided into three main groups:

  • Sporting Clays
  • Trap
  • Skeet

Sporting clays is a shotgun shooting sport in which clay pigeons are presented to the shooter in ways that mirror the flight pattern of game birds in their natural habitats. The shooting grounds are laid out in stations with each station representing one type of bird or a combination of game. With variations in trap position, trap speed, shooting position, and flight paths, targets can come through the trees, from under your feet, straight down, over your head, quartering, going away, left to right, right to left, and in any path a real bird might choose.

Trap is where up to five shooters take one shot at each of five targets fired from different positions. The trap in the trap house rotates back and forth in different positions and throws the clays away from the shooter. Doubles means two targets are thrown at the same time and a shooter gets one shot per target. When shooting a trap, a round is 25 targets.

The basic difference between skeet shooting and trapshooting is that in skeet, most of the targets are crossing targets and in trapshooting, all of the targets are outgoing targets. Nestled alongside the sporting clays course, just a short walk from the clubhouse, we offer open public shooting as well as league shooting in the spring and summer months.
