Welcome to Fishers Peak State Park
Fishers Peak is characterized by rugged topography, diverse and healthy ecosystems, abundant wildlife and the park’s namesake, Fishers Peak, prominently presiding at 9,633 feet. The forests and meadows that cloak the park’s hillsides and ravines are complemented by the striking geological features that have given this particular landscape the iconic status it has held through many generations of residents and travelers.
Fishers Peak Trailhead
At this time, just a small piece of the 19,200-acre park is open to the public. The area is called Fishers Peak Trailhead, and it is the gateway to approximately 250 acres of public land, including nearly 2 miles of trails.
For those who want more outdoor recreation, Trinidad Lake State Park is just a few miles away, offering hiking, camping, fishing, boating and more!

Accessing the Park
From I-25, take exit 11 east to County Road 69-3 (Santa Fe Trail). Travel south until you see the entrance gate and signage on the left.
Visitors can park in the Walmart and Wendy’s restaurant parking lot in Trinidad.
There are no electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at the park, but two are available in nearby Trinidad (5 miles away). Take I-25 to Exit 11 for Trinidad. In Trinidad, both the Walmart parking lot and the parking lot at the Wendy's restaurant have EV charging stations.

Nature and Wildlife
The park connects grasslands to the east with foothills and mountains to the west, serving as an important corridor for wildlife movement. Successful raptor nests, the endangered New Mexico meadow jumping mouse, and many other rare, unexpected and unique species have been located in the park to date.
Large native species like elk, mule deer, white-tailed deer, mountain lion and black bear can be found in the area. The property helps maintain important connections between these species’ populations in the mountains and those in the prairies.

History
Colorado Parks and Wildlife, along with our partners from the City of Trinidad, The Nature Conservancy, the Trust for Public Land, Las Animas County and Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) continue to plan the future of the Fishers Peak property.
The Fishers Peak property was purchased in February 2019 through a collaboration between the City of Trinidad, The Nature Conservancy, the Trust for Public Land, Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) and Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW). In April 2020, CPW acquired the property and, working with our partners, are developing Colorado’s newest state park.

Volunteer OpportunitiesProvide Input
Development of the first State Park Management Plan for Fishers Peak State Park is underway. You are invited to join a public meeting to learn more about the process and provide input to inform the plan’s development! To learn more about the plan, you can join a meeting virtually on Zoom Tuesday, November 12 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. or in person in the Pioneer Room at Trinidad State College in Trinidad, CO on Tuesday, November 19 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.. Feedback will be accepted now through December 13, 2024.
