Activities and Trails
John Martin Reservoir is renowned for fishing, boating and waterfowl hunting. Situated along the Arkansas River, it's a key stop on the Colorado Birding Trail. Around 400 bird species have been observed in the area. The mild climate allows year-round outdoor activities like boating, swimming, hunting, water skiing and camping, making it a popular weekend destination.
The park's main attractions are the John Martin Reservoir and Lake Hasty. Visitors can have fun boating, fishing, jet skiing and swimming on the lake. An accessible fishing pier and picnic site is available on the west shoreline of Lake Hasty.
Many consider the park a birdwatcher's paradise, with a diverse community of over 400 resident and migratory birds. Majestic bald eagles roost here in winter. Threatened and endangered species like the piping plover and the least tern make the park their home for several months each year.
John Martin Reservoir is an excellent area for viewing wildlife. Recent sightings include hundreds of bird species, deer, coyotes, bobcat, porcupines, beavers, snakes, turtles and raccoons.
A swim beach is available for guests at Lake Hasty over the summer season between Memorial Day and Labor Day. No lifeguards are on duty, so swimmers are urged to use caution.
