What to Do at Vega
On the northeast edge of Grand Mesa, Vega State Park’s meadows and aspen-covered slopes attract hikers, bikers, horseback riders, and bird and wildlife enthusiasts. The reservoir is perfect for trout fishing, boating and water sports. Four campgrounds offer 113 sites, including electric options, and five year-round cabins provide unique overnight stays. The Meadows group picnic area is a popular choice for mountain weddings.

Best of Vega
Vega Reservoir
Vega’s two-mile-long reservoir is the largest body of water in the Grand Valley and the park's main attraction. Visitors can boat, fish, jet ski, paddle board and water ski. Swimming is allowed in the no-wake zones on the reservoir.
Paddle Boarding
The reservoir offers the perfect paddle boarding opportunity, with stunning views and expansive waters! Participants must have a properly sized life jacket while paddle boarding.
Watch Wildlife
Depending upon the time of year and time of day, you can view various wildlife, including marmots, chipmunks, foxes, beavers, porcupines and, on rare occasions, bear. Always maintain a safe distance from wildlife. There is a possibility you might even see a moose!
Cabins
Vega has five rustic cabins available throughout the year located adjacent to a great sledding hill. Cabins include heat, a microwave and a refrigerator.

Hiking
Trails
All of Vega's trails are open year-round and offer great views of the surrounding forest and reservoir. Seasonally, visitors enjoy wildflower and wildlife viewing, hiking, trail biking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.
Horseback Riding
Take a leisurely ride around the lake with your four-legged friends! Approximately seven miles of paved and dirt roads make for an easy ride. For the more adventurous, hundreds of mile of trails can be accessed in the Grand Mesa National Forest.
Vega Trail

Access point: The trailhead is located at the north end of the park. Begin at the Grouse Day Use Area parking lot, follow the lake and end at Oak Point campground.
West End Trail

Access point: The trailhead is located at the west end of the park. Begin at the Grouse day-use area parking lot and end at the Visitor Center.
Aspen Nature Trail

Access point: The trail begins at the off-highway vehicle (OHV)/snowmobile staging area parking lot, located in the southwest corner of the park.
South Road Winter Trail

Access point: Access the closed winter road from the OHV/snowmobile staging area parking lot.
Horses, mountain bikes and off-highway vehicles (OHVs) are not allowed on any of Vega's trails.
The off-highway vehicle and snowmobile staging area is located in the southwest corner of the park and provides trailer parking with easy access to hundreds of miles of open trails in Grand Mesa National Forest. Operation of off-highway vehicles in the park is permitted only in the Early Settlers Campground, Pioneer Campground parking area and the staging area, and is strictly for access to and from Forest Road 262 and Grand Mesa. If camping in the Aspen Grove or Oak Point campgrounds, off-highway vehicles must be hauled to the lot adjacent to Park Creek Road. A daily or annual park pass is required to use the lot.
Activity
Hunting
The park is open for hunting by archery or shotgun loaded with birdshot only during established hunting seasons, starting the first Tuesday after Labor Day through the Friday before Memorial Day. Many hunters camp or rent Vega's cabins and then access the vast hunting areas on the Grand Mesa. Hunting licenses are available for purchase at the Visitor Center.
