Suggested Parks for Wildflower Viewing Season
Staunton
Wildflowers are abundant throughout Staunton State Park with its extensive vegetation diversity. Staff and volunteers offer impressive knowledge about every wildflower species along the trail. For example, the delicate white flowers above are called yarrow, and they can be used to treat wounds. Who knew? With 19 trails, you should have no problem on your quest to admire wildflowers.
Roxborough
The 4,000 acre Roxborough State Park has stunning red rocks, grassy meadows and diverse plant life. The 1.5 mile Willow Creek Trail is a great place to start your bloom search - or you can book a tour of Fountain Valley Trail while riding on an extended electric golf cart, the Rox Ride! This is perfect for those who would like to experience the beauty of the park without having to hike a trail.
Vega
Park visitors will find lush montane meadows filled with colorful wildflowers. Vega State Park offers excellent documentation on the wide variety of blooms you might find along their trails. Set at 8,000 feet on the northeast edge of the Grand Mesa, Vega is a great (and cooler) place to enjoy Colorado’s outdoors.
Mueller
Wildflowers provide extra color to everyone enjoying the many trails at Mueller State Park, including the queen’s crown, shooting star, columbine, elephant head and sneezeweed. The park often provides guided hikes, where naturalists can point out the different flowers that paint the meadows and hillsides.
Steamboat Lake
At 8,200 feet, Steamboat Lake State Park has expansive native plant communities, flaunting a wide variety of colors in its flowering displays. These include lupine, mule’s ear, scarlet gilia, aspen fleabane, red clover, hairy clematis and more. There are more than seven miles of trails to explore to find your rainbow of wildflowers. Steamboat staff have also intentionally worked hard at building a native pollinator garden you can check out.
