Plan your next fishing trip on a Colorado Quality Water!

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is excited to announce a new category of fishable waters that our talented team of fish management biologists has identified and nominated based on their fish sampling records, creel surveys, and professional biological assessments. The list is called Colorado Quality Waters. These waters are below the threshold to be considered Gold Medal, but they are recognized because of their fantastic and diverse fisheries.

These lakes and streams contain productive, quality fisheries with public access and are fishable by most angling methods. The waters may have been nominated for one species or a whole suite of species.  The list below is organized by region, and we encourage anglers to view the Quality Waters map and plan a trip to hook into their next big fish!

The fishery potential is limited by the flow conditions coming out of Ridgway Reservoir.  The Paco-chu-puk section of the river on Ridgway State Park requires catch and release and artificial flies and lures only, and the fish can be somewhat picky.  The section on Billy Creek SWA allows all methods and harvest but has lower use due to difficult access along the river.

Special Regulations

From the fence just below the USGS Gauge Station below Ridgway Dam downstream to the confluence with Cow Creek:

  1. Fishing is by artificial flies and lures only.
  2. All trout must be returned to the water immediately upon catch.
  3. There is no bag or possession limit for channel catfish, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, walleye, green sunfish, bluegill, bullhead, yellow perch or crappie.

Uncompahgre River (Colorado Quality Waters Map)

Segment: From Woodgate Road downstream to LaSalle Road bridge (Montrose)
Species: Rainbow trout, brown trout

The fishery has densities of trout that are just below the Gold Medal standards but still offers good fishing primarily in the fall, winter, and spring. During summer months, the river is often high, limiting angler success. Public access is sporadic and primarily exists within the town of Montrose. Anglers should take care to know property boundaries before fishing.
