The Colorado wildfires of 2002 and 2012 brought national attention to how quick and devastating wildfires can be.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife's Forest Management Program aims to use the latest scientifically proven methods to ensure proper stewardship of forest resources on State Parks, while affording necessary protection of other natural and cultural resources. The main goal is to slow the spread of fire through fuels mitigation in order to protect people, structures and watersheds.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife works very closely with the Colorado State Forest Service (CSFS) and leverages Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) funding in a unique cooperative program. Projects are coordinated in and around our State Parks, working with neighbors on a landscape scale to reduce the risk of wildfires and improve forest resiliency to insect and disease epidemics.
