A stunning transition from peaks to plains provide viewers with minimally disturbed but highly diverse transitional zones between Great Plains grassland communities and montane coniferous forest.
Varying grass species and mushrooms grow depending on rainfall with good quality mixed grass prairie and outstanding foothill prairie plant communities. Carrion flower, a somewhat rare vine native to the front range and an unusual community of Scribner’s needle grass can be found along with Ponderosa pine.
Some of the northern-most wild grape populations and some of the largest strands of plum in the Colorado Springs are found here.
The eastern side of the park features an extensive oak shrubland and grassland mosaic extending over many acres.
The interpretive herbarium exhibit, at the Visitor's Center, provides a great “hands-on” showcase of pressed plant specimens found at the park.
